Student Supervision

I welcome enquiries from students who are interested in the theoretical areas of authoritarian politics, contentious politics, and the political economy of development. Aside from China, I also have expertise in Singapore, Malaysia, India, and other developing countries in Asia.

Letters of Recommendation

As a rule of thumb, I can only write letters of recommendation for students who have at least taken a course with me. If you were interested in a letter, please supply me with the following information and documents: (1) course name and year taken; (2) your transcripts or screenshots from ROSI; (3) entry requirements of the degree(s) you are applying to, and where to send the letters. I need at least two weeks’ notice in advance.

You should note that recruitment officers often look for something beyond a standard letter. You should solicit letters from professors who know you and your work well. Good luck!
